Difference between 24-hour live-in, overnight and hourly cases

Difference between 24-hour live-in, overnight and hourly cases

Many families prefer to hire in-home caregivers to serve the routine needs of the person who requires care. And if you are looking for a job as a caregiver, it is important to understand a few essential factors.  There are 3 different types of cases: 24-Hour Live-In, overnight, and hourly cases. Each one of these cases has their own pros and cons that you need to consider before making a decision of the best fit for you.

Hourly Cases

The caregiver’s shifts can generally begin from 3 hours in duration, and can be extended up to 12 hours maximum. Such services are suitable for people that do not suffer any serious illness; rather they just need some assistance for routine activities such as meal preparation, grooming, toileting, dressing, eating, and bathing. Hourly cases are great for caregivers who are looking for a flexible schedule that fits them best.

Overnight Cases

The overnight cases can be divided into two categories: one is overnight supervision, and the other is the overnight active case. The overnight supervision cases do not include a hectic job as the caregiver can sleep during the night, but the client must be able to wake them up whenever he/she needs some assistance. This type of cases fits for caregivers who prefer to work nights with a possibility to take a rest for a few hours.

On the other side, for the overnight active cases, caregivers are expected to stay awake and active all the time to fulfil all needs of clients. These cases are suitable for caregivers who would like to provide assistance to their client during the night.

24-Hour Live-In Cases

In this instance, the caregivers stay permanently with the client to provide 24-hour assistance. The client receives 5-day or 7-day continuous assistance based on their needs, and the tasks are often divided between 2 caregivers. These caregivers are occupied with providing assistance to the client with daily routine and when the client is sleeping, the caregiver is free to rest. These caregivers usually work 3-4 days per week and are allowed to study, work on another job or spend time with family for the rest of the week.
