a group of happy nonsmoking elderly people

Smoking is one of the worst things that people could ever do in regards to their health. Most people begin smoking in their teenage years because for some reason it’s considered “cool” to smoke. And we get it, the peer pressure is strong, the allure of the smoke is high, and the cigarettes themselves can be incredibly addictive. So, don’t feel bad if you somehow managed to get addicted to cigarettes. All people have weaknesses, and yours juts happen to be tobacco. But you can deal with it no matter who you are.

Now, smoking is dangerous for young people. It wreaks havoc in their bodies and it messes with their entire system. But if you’re a senior citizen and you smoke, then the hazard for your health is twice as big, to say the least. This is because of two important reasons. The first one is the fact that by now you most likely have smoked for a prolonged period of time – perhaps 20, 30 years. And the damage of smoking is cumulative – this means that your body begins to function worse and worse as the result of cigarette smoking.

The second reason is that the older body can’t really deal all that well with pollutants such as cigarette smoke, like the youthful body. It’s a sad fact of life that all of us will have to deal with eventually. So, if you really care about your health, then the best thing you could do is to give up smoking.

The most powerful method which you can use in order to do this is called “cold turkey”. It’s as hardcore as it sounds – it means that you will stop this instant with cigarette use, and you won’t smoke ever again. Of course, this demands huge willpower, and preparedness to face the consequences. The withdrawal symptoms may be really severe, especially in the first two weeks. But if you manage to go through them, then you will have done one of the hardest things in the world – a thing that most people that smoke swears that they can’t do. And your health will be improved.

If this isn’t for you though, then we recommend a gradual shift in your smoking habit. Smoke less and less, decrease your cigarette intake with time. Stop doing the things that you associate with smoking. Stop hanging out in places where you usually smoke. And do things that will take your mind off the cigarettes. It’s as simple as that.

As you see, quitting smoking is the same no matter who you are. Either way, it is one of the best decisions you could make.
